Transformer transport in Qatar

Nov 22, 2018

JSL Global, member to the Worldwide Project Consortium (WWPC) for Qatar, secured a project to manage the safe handling and transport of four transformers from Hamad Port to the jobsite. The installation of the transformers onto foundation at the Qatar Water Electricity (KAHRAMA) project site was also managed by the experts from JSL Global.

Each of the four 40MVA transformers had dimensions of 6.6 x 2.55 x 3.5 m and a single weight of 42 tons.

A special challenge emerged because the transformers arrived at the port loaded on Maersk Line flat racks and as per client request offload or destuff this cargo inside the port was not an option in order to avoid double handling of the transformers in order to minimize risk of damages and cost. Because of the height of each flat rack plus the transformer on top, it was possible to load them on special lowbed trailers which transported the flat racks and the cargo on top safely to the jobsite.

JSL Global was also involved into several approvals from their government client enabling them to install these transformers directly from the trailers onto foundations, using a 250 ton mobile crane.
