The Association for the Welfare of handicapped children
The Association for the Welfare of handicapped children was established in 1996 by a Royal Decree. It was however functioning since 1991 and considered the oldest and most well-established association in Oman.
The Association is spread over 11 centres, serving overall 450 children from 5-14 years. Disabilities of these children are different, including mental, physical and mix of both in addition to children with autism. Children from all nationalities are served free of charge. The services to children are from 8:00 to 12:30 pm, five days a week.
The association centres offer children rehabilitative service, focusing on teaching children self-dependence and self-reliance in addition to teaching them basic educational principles. As the importance of the role of parents with their children is realized, the parents are trained and educated on how to deal with their children on day to day basis.
